I'm a UK citizen (waiting for GC), and one obversation that I have is:
If you are very good in your profession odds are that you'll suceed in either country. But if you are average (and by definition most are) then you'll be at a disadvantage with respect to the locals when you go somewhere new, especially if you don't have good contacts.
So I'd recommend thinking dispassionately about how good you are at your profession, and just as importantly how well that comes across in resume or interview. Do you have good contacts in UK?
I'm not sure if "indefinite leave to stay" gives you access to the whole EU, but it's a path to UK citizenship which does give you access to the whole EU job market (language barriers permitting). It does suck that UK gov effectively retrospectively changed the rules for "indefinite leave to stay", but at least in UK there is an end date (unless they push it out each year). Here for some there is no obvious end date for the waiting.

One more thing that you might look into is the vacations that you hae taken. Generally speaking, if you spend time outside the US, you can exclude that time from the H1B 6 year limit. So if you took an average of 2 week vacation every year, you could get about 12 additional weeks. So your H1B would expire closer to Dec end, instead of 30 Sep.
You might need to provide documentation to prove this though. The additional time might be valuable nevertheless.

I would like to make most of the form thread details be accessible to members who had paid at least $100 or enrolled for recursive $20/month. We should make the thread heading very attractive and make it accessible to public. Core members should review all the thread headings, I think they are already doing it now. I can volunteer to this activity. I do have 8 years of experience in studying US immigration law, though I am not a lawyer, with my experience I can be of some guidance.

Provide advertisement (Ad), like we see top, right side and bottom page Ad in hotmail, yahoo etc. Apart from the flash, images Ads, we should also do Google text Ads. Flash Ad could be charged based on the space, number of page hits. Google pays 25 cents per click on the hyperlink for the text Ad. I had managed a project, which implemented the feature. I am sure we have lot of technical experts and get this implemented, very well.
Corporate Sponsorship
If a corporation sponsors money then most probably there will be some tax advantage. I do know IV�s tax code. Consulting companies could pay IV from our company account.
Physicians
We can identify all our physician members and provide help for members and their parents in need. In turn the members who had taken help could contribute to IV�s good cause, in terms of funds, taking part in activities, etc. Hi the concept is very simple, if you had gone to a doctor, you will end up spending 2 hr waiting to see the doctor and then pay 150 to talk to them for 15 min. We will help you and intern you help us, or may be help yourself if you are a person going through the GC process. I can take initiative for this task, my wife is a physician and I know 20 other doctors who are in the GC process.

There is no serious effort by the republicans. They are fractured, divided, into groups. They have no motivation to get this comprehensive bill passed. I have been observing the tactics and attitudes of these republican senators and democratic senators. I am more shocked by the game of one-upmanship on the part of Frist, Kyl, Cornyn, Craig. I don't see rhyme or reason in their sppeches. The bill has no life for the next 3 weeks.

Frist wants to distance himself from Bush and McCain - both guys supporting guest worker programs and legalization of the undocumented workers. He wants to show he is "strong on security" by pushing through a border security only bill. He is using Kyl and others to torpedo the SJC bill either on the senate floor or in the conference. Bush is too powerless to intervene.

I was in a similar frame of mind like you a few days ago...thinking whether to switch to EAD with different company or not.
On technical side, job title and description does not need to be word-to-word same. Just use common-sense (if a programmer is going to be working as an Electrician or Systems Administrator, that might cause a problem. Otherwise you should be able to prove the similarity.)
On the other side, EAD is a gift USCIS has given while your 485 is pending. Even being on H1B, there is nothing much you can do if you run out of luck. So, why not enjoy the freedom? Come out in the sky. You will "feel" it, especially if your current employer is "desi" or if you have to call them 10 times in a month to get your paycheck.
I am myself invoking AC21 in April. Whatever happens, I know I will survive. Wherever I live later (India or US), I know I will be with my family and I will still have tens of reasons to thank God for.
If you want to be a little more conservative, spend few dollars and get a back-up of an attorney.
Let go of the negativity. Do it.

I dont think its worth it to fight the rejection of 485 and start all over again.. If they reject my 485 I will go home and be happy ... Most of the people on this forum are blessed compared to so many other Indians ..

From the day you file your case you are legal to work with your new employer until its approval or denial. When you file your case (filed in normal processing without including paystub) sometimes they just approve it and sometimes they ask for a current paystub for evidence to close the case as approved. As you start working for your new company you would get a pay stub which can be used for the query.
That's a good point as well. I am planning to go in for premium processing on the safer side. But, if there is a query for pay stubs, they would require my previous employer's pay stubs right (the one from whom I am transferring my H1B visa to begin with)? I hope you are right, and my assumption is wrong. Looking at the responses, a lot is dependant on the immigration officer.

Unfortunatly for me and my wife, it appears we will be missing this window of opportunity. Just happened to have filed an AP for her. F&$k USCIS:mad:
Hardly an hour passed by when I got email from CRIS saying " welcome ..." reminding me of Eagles song "welcome to hotel california ...", this was the very song, I heard for first time while waiting for TOFEL exam in summer of 1999 in Delhi. Oh... such a wonderful place.

Hello guys,
I applied for I140 & I485 + EAD concurrently at the Texas service center on July 19th. I got the receipts dated Sept 11 on Sept 17 and a week later I got the EAD's. My priority date is Feb 04.
I live in New Jersey and I would assume my FP appointment will be at the NewArk USCIS center. I still did not get any FP notification yet and I started to worry because on the tracker a lot of people with the same dates did get one already. Should I worry or is OK for now ? Is New Jersey more crowded than other states and that is the reason for delay ??? Anybody else in the same boat ??
I know they consider the application abandoned if I have an appointment and don't go. If, god forbid, the letter is lost in the mail, is there any way I can find out if I have an appointment ?
I have don't have a lawyer so they will not send a copy of the FP appointment letter to the lawyer.
Please help !

I understand if someone was stuck in BEC, we all got s****ed with that.
But why given that the H1B is only intended to be for a maximum of 6 years would anyone leave it until the last year to apply.
PERM has been around for a while now, and anyone approaching 6 years should have already filed PERM or be ready to leave after year 6.
I am not talking about applying when one reaches the 5th year. What I am saying is that a person starts applying from the first year itself (under the new merit system) but does not get a number because the quota is oversubscribed. Believe me or not this may happen to an economics or business professor with a Ph.D. from India or China. This person will have to apply every year under the proposed merit system. If this person does not get a number by the 6th year she/he has to leave. So a professor may get tenure but not an extension on H1-B because she/he did not ever get an opportunity to file a I-140.

If we submit tax returns then do CIS check those to see what exsumptions we have taken etc??? One of my friend by mistake took hope credits coupld yrs ago and is terrified that CIS may catch this if he sends the tax returns so he has been fighting with his attorney about not sending it!! both he and his wife are earning and no dependents. Any thoughts on the situation??
I told him checking the tax returns is not CIS's function!! That is IRS.......he should relax. By the way, what happens if he approaches IRS saying it was an honest mistake and pays off the exsumption he took.

Cool, I learned something new today. I guess I knew the concept of the polarizer but had yet to learn all of the ins and outs. Thanks Josh.
Linear vs. Circular has mainly to do with whether it works with metering and autofocus sensors in modern cameras. Both polarizers rotate and function similarly (I'm not sure if there is any difference in the effect shown in the image, but I doubt it).
Anyway, an unevenly polarized sky happens not because the polarizer is not rotated properly / enough, but rather because the camera is not quite at a 90 degree angle to the sun; this uneven polarization becomes more noticeable with wide angle lenses (to a point, then as even wider lenses are used, the sky will get dark in the middle and lighter on the edges even right at 90 degrees from the sun).
